Meditation Instruction

Learn to Meditate

Meditation HallInterested individuals are encouraged to come to our Introduction to Meditation sessions that are held regularly, at 11:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of the month.  The Introduction to Meditation sessions are now being held in our regular meditation space in the Grandview Heights Community Centre.

Once you have been to an introductory class you are encouraged to join our regular services. Many of our members believe that the practice of meditation is enhanced when done in a group setting. Meditation is also known to have many health benefits. Try it for yourself.

See the upcoming events box in the right hand side bar for future sessions. Find one that is right for you and email us to register ( Everyone is welcome to attend. Registration is not strictly necessary, but does help us plan and organize better.

The Introduction to Meditation sessions consist of orientation to our practice, the basics of Buddhism, meditation instruction, and a brief meditation period. The sessions take roughly 1  hour. There is no fixed cost for the session. Our meditation group operates on a dana (offering) basis. Dana can be made in any amount at any time but it is not a requirement, so there is no pressure at all to give. Once an orientation has been attended, you are welcome to join us for any of our regular scheduled gatherings.

If you plan on attending, please wear non-restrictive comfortable clothing. We generally try to stay away from wearing shorts, or really bright or distracting clothing (i.e. large logos or slogans) to the meditation hall.

The web site of our Order, the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (, is a good site to visit for a preliminary introduction to our practice. You can find general information, articles, and other downloadable resources there. Additionally, it would be a good idea to check out the Shasta Abbey website ( for additional information on our practice and for Dharma talks, references to scriptures, and the like.
